You will pass through Immigration and Customs at Terminal 8. 2.5 is tight for 16 students to pass immigration and Customs but may be possible if it isnt busy.

Connecting flight from T8 to T4
CHIN: Hi I will be traveling from Austin (AUS, Texas, USA) to Delhi (DEL, India) via New York (JFK). My AA flight from AUS will reach at JFK T8 at 2.30PM and Air India flight will leave from JFK T4 at 4.50 PM. I will have 02 check-in luggage along with 1 carry-on bag.
I am an INDIAN citizen and returning back to India from USA.
(a) Will I need to retrieve my luggage at T8 and go to Terminal 4 and check in again the luggage(2 checked bag)?
(b) Do I have to go through custom and security check-in again at Terminal 8 / T4 ?
(c) Where do I need to check out for I-94, at T4 or T8?
(c) Is 2.20 hour enough time to complete all these formalities and get from Terminal 8 to Terminal 4?

terminal transfer and timing
I am arriving from BWI to terminal 2 and have only 1 hour to get to terminal 1 for an international flight (delta). Will I need to retrieve my luggage again and go through customs at all before I depart for Italy. Is one hour enough time to get from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1? Thank you
Very tight connection time
Very tight connection time window. From my understanding your first flight is domestic. Make sure at BWI you ask for your luggage to be checked all the way to final destination. It is tight but possible if your first flight is on time.

You dont have to take taxi
You dont have to take taxi but taxi would be fastest for you. There are some shuttle buses at JFK inquire at Ground Transportation Desk at JFK.
