History - Construction of the airport began in 1942 with modest ambitions. Only 1,000 acres (4 km²) of land on the site of Idlewild golf course were earmarked for use. The golf course provided the airport's original namesake, Idlewild Airport. First commercial flights began on July 1, 1948. The airport was formally dedicated as New York International Airport on July 31, 1948. It was re-dedicated on December 24, 1963 as John F. Kennedy International Airport, following action of the Mayor and Council of the City of New York, and a resolution of the Commissioners of the Port Authority. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, JFK was one of the first airports in the United States to be temporarily closed.

There is not a smoking area
There is not a smoking area at the airport. I went outside to smoke and had to change my tickets after that because the connecting flight was with different airline than the one I used to check myself in. It took a while as also going through security took little longer than I thought. But changing the ticket was definitely worth it, had never seen as cute man checking me in :)
Long Wait at JFK with small children!
Hi there,
We are travelling from London to JFK to get a connecting flight to San Juan. The only trouble is we have a long wait for our connecting flight in terminal 8.. are there any play areas or things we can do with Children under 3!

Hi, I am flying from overseas arriving JFK then i have a two hours connection flying to Houston. I have been told by the travel agent that customs point is in New York now which means i have to check my bags out then check in again to go to Houston. I have two babies with me. Is there a way or a facility at the airport to help mums in this situation? something like airport cars to help me pick up the bags ( while i am looking after my children) and drop us off to the second departure point. I am traveling end of Aug . pls assist. thnx
