Terminal transfer with luggage

I am landing in Terminal 5 on JetBlue and need to claim my baggage and then transfer to terminal 4 to re check in with Etihad due to 2 independent reservations / ticket purchases that cannot be merged. Can I use the Air Tran connecting the terminals? How much walking is involved in getting from baggage claim to the Air Tran?
