Latest TSA Security Directives

3-1–1 for Carry-ons

Air travelers may now carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints.

With certain exceptions for prescription and over-the-counter medicines, baby formula and breast milk, and other essential liquids, gels, and aerosols, the following rules apply to all liquids, gels, and aerosols you want to carry through a security checkpoint.

3–1–1 for carry-ons

  • 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin.

One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measur

Come early and be patient. Heavy travel volumes and the enhanced security process may mean longer lines at security checkpoints.

Updates to the TSA Security Requirements(effective November 10, 2006):

Latest security bans according to the TSA Security Directives

Summary of Security Directive Changes for Flights departing from and within the U.S.

  • Effective November 10, 2006, the TSA has advised that travelers may now carry through security checkpoints travel-size toiletries (3.4 ounces/100 ml or less) that fit comfortably in ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic re-sealable bag. At the security checkpoint passengers will be asked to remove the clear plastic re-sealable bag from their accessible baggage and place it in a separate bin or on the conveyor belt for screening. X-raying these items separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items. In addition, prescription liquid, gel and aerosol medications, baby formula/milk/food, and diabetic glucose treatments must be declared at the checkpoint for additional screening if they are not included in the ONE QUART clear plastic re-sealable bag.

  • Passengers who attempt to bring undeclared liquids, gels, or aerosols into the sterile area without providing to the TSA for separate screening may be subjected to secondary screening.

  • Passengers who purchase liquids, gels, and/or aerosols in the sterile area are now allowed to take them onboard the aircraft.

  • Duty Free liquids, gels, and/or aerosols purchased inside the sterile area may be brought onboard the aircraft by passengers, and no longer must be delivered to the aircraft.

Notarized letter would be a good choice to make to be on a safe side.

I took Emirates flight EK202 on Friday, 28th January 2011 from JFK terminal 4. I had checked in one piece of luggage with TSA approved number lock. The bag contained my clothes and a few gifts for my family including two Nintendo Wii game CDs.

I just landed in Bangalore to find that the lock was opened and the Nintendo game CDs are missing.

I am shocked and disappointed that someone would stoop so low to steal games meant for kids. Shame on you.

I also urge the authorities at JFK TSA to look into this matter seriously and get to the bottom of this. My 8 year old son was looking forward to his games and now he would be disappointed because some lowlife stole his games.

Incidents like this have happened before and there are documented cases on Internet where the baggage handlers at JFK have admitted to stealing from passenger's luggage.

I hope that the culprits are caught and brought to justice.

Please calm down and call your airlines please.

Can I bring pizza slices through security? I will have them wrapped up in foil and plastic bags.. I am flying domestic from NY to NC tomorrow.. I have a friend in NC who really wants some pizza!

I've done it before from jfk to burbank, ca. the pizzas were placed in a food container and put in my personal bag. food is allowed.

Please call the airport.

No food is allowed to go through security.

no. you can not bring any food or drink. even tho NYC pizza should be an exception :)

My wife is a foreign national flying into JFK on an international flight, then getting a domestic connecting flight. How much time should we allow between flights for her to clear customs and immigration? She is reading horror stories in forums that the wait can be anywhere between 2-10 hours.

Also, she speaks very little English. Are there any services at the airport where someone can meet her and make sure she gets to the right place for her next flight?

2 hours would be safe enough to clear immigration and customs and then catch another flight. Unfortunately no such services exist at this airport.

Hello, I am flying from JFK on Jet Blue to North Carolina soon, and I am wondering if there will be an issue on bringing a NY Pizza, that is individually wrapped in foil and in plastic bags in my carry on? I noticed the TSA site only had issues with liquid like foods, but I did not thing pizza's apply.. my co-worker thinks differently, but I want to find out before I pay for an expensive pizza and extra $ for them to wrap it properly. Thanks!

My husband & I are meant to be flying tomorrow morning on a domestic US flight.
He has just returned from a business trip & has just discovered that he lost his passport at some point during the last flight.
As he doesn't have his passport, are there any other forms of identification that would be acceptable to fly with? He has his old passport, copies of his visa (we currently live in the US) & current passport & an Australian driver's license - would these documents suffice?

If he has U.S drivers license he might get off the hook. If the other documents listed may not be enough.

I am flying Jet Blue this Sat. am I allowed to bring my GPS with me in my carry on along with my laptop?

Yes. You are allowed to keep laptop and GPS in your carry on bag without problems.
