Hi, there i'm Daniel and i'm from Portugal, and here is the succeeding. I am moving from Portugal to the US, for a house of a familiar, and i have worked here in Portugal at the Lisbon airport for a year as a Ground Service Operator, i guess that's the right traslation for it in English!
And what i wanted to ask you is, if it's too hard to get a job at the JFK, and what is the procedures that i have to do since i get to the airport. I know i can go to the department of human resourses of the airport but that will take to long for me, for them to call me for a vacant job available, i guess?!
So if you could gave me these kind of informations i'm asking i'll be grateful 'cause i need to find a job as soon as i can or once i has left the plane in there! And by the way can you gave some more depth info? I wanted to know or ask if you could make me a list of the companies doing this kind of work at the JFK or in some other airports on the US, and what is the minimum i'll won if i get a job like this in there?
Sorry about this questions, they are boring, i know, but the reason i'm asking you this it's because i wanted to find a job before i go to the country for not to get there and stand looking at the planes leaving and coming, if you know what i mean?!
So thanks you for reading, and i hope you could gave me a concrete answer, and sorry for my English, i am still having lessons. :P
Bye, Daniel. ;)

What exactly have you worked at Lisbon?
JFK_E

As a ground service operator, that consists on, working up on terminals watching out for bagages and arrange them up on ULD's, baggage carts, and preparing live animals too for the flight. And outside on the ramp area doing assistance on the plane arriving, arraging the luggage inside the plane, at the cellar(i guess that's the right translation for it in US English, anyhow that was the only i've found for the PT translation, i guess you know what i'm trying to tell you :P)etc..
But what i really don't have is the experience driving some kind of vehicles intended to use at the airports only, as pushbacks, loaders, etc., but i guess if get a job in there at the JFK they'll teach me how to drive them, right?! Anyway thanks for reading my comment, and i hope i get a job before i arrive at the US there. But if you want to send me an answer i'll prefer if you send it to me to my e-mail, just for avoiding these huge comments here at the blog. Dany_rx8@hotmail.com
Thanks a lot for your interest responding my doubts.
Have a nice day! ;)

Hello

I am flying from the uk on American Airlines, landing at JFK then flying our to Orlando (same airline), Do I need to collect my luggage, go through customs then go to my connecting flight.

Thanks You

Yes, you will collect your luggage, clear customs/immigration, drop your luggage at the AA connecting flights counter and proceed upstairs to the departure level, clear security and then to your departure gate to Orlando.

Hello, I'm arriving to JFK from London, then I need to get plane to Buffalo NY, how much time i need to get all my staff (luggage, customs...) at terminal 7 which is used by British Airways as I think to catch plane on terminal 3 where Delta is flying to Buffalo. If my opinion about terminals is bad please correct me. I'm foreigner vith VISA. Thanks.

You will need at least 2-2.5 hrs to make the connection in your case. The terminal's info that you have is correct. Use the Airtrain on track 2 to get from T7 to T3.

hello,

I am a senior citizen (age 67) travelling with my wife (age61) arriving at new york by Delta airlines 6742 (CRJ) on 13 Aug 2010. I need to go to 201 East, 28th Street, New York . I understand that the cheaper way to go to this place is through a combination of Airtrain & Subway. Can someone give me info on the following :

a) do i need to get a metro card to make use of the air train and if so its cost , validity period and place of availability of the same at JFK .

b) i understand we need to go to Jamaica station and then catch the subway transport to go to Manhattan. Can i get info on transport wise cost of tickets i.e the air train cost , along with the route number of subway transport that i need to take to reach my destination and its / their costs.

c) Are there any concessions / discounts for the senior citizen which i can avail in air train /subway .

d) can i come back the same route to catch a flt on 16th Aug evening . How much lead time is required to reach the airport in time for check in formalities

e) in terms of time how much time it takes by this alternate route as compared to taxi

I am a visitor to United States and it is my first trip to New York .

I shall be grateful if anyone can give me information on the above queries.

Thanks in advance.

Col Rajaraman

Sorry, no senior citizen discounts on the either Airtrain or subway. Subway is $2.25 per trip (includes transfers) and the Airtrain is $5. You can use the regular pay-per-ride Metrocard for both, purchase a Metrocard at the self-service machines before you exit Airtrain at Jamaica Station. You can re-fill your Metrocard as often as you like and can be used by up to 4 persons so you and your wife can share one. If you purchase a Metrocard for $8 or more you get a 15% discount so if you expect to use public transportation often during your stay you can put a large amount on the card and save. Cards expire after one year. To get to your destination by subway take Airtrain to Jamaica Station, then take the E subway to 53rd St./Lexington Ave. Transfer there to the downtown #6 subway and get off at 28th St. Walk one block east towards 3rd Ave. and your destination. You can take the same route back to JFK, travel time is about 1.5 hours. Arrive at JFK at least 2-3 hours in advance for international departures. Taxi is $45+tolls+tip and will take you directly to your destination, travel time 45 minutes-1 hr.

I'm arriving from Ireland and need to travel from Terminal 4 to Jamaica station. Can I buy a single journey Airtrain ticket in the airport? Also how long does baggage reclaim usually take? Thanks for your help

You can buy a ticket for a single journey on Airtrain. The Airtrain system is unique in terms of paying the fare - you pay as you exit the system. So you can buy the fare at Jamaica Station(from vending machines or Metrocard agents), swipe the card and exit the system.
On average the baggage reclaim takes between 20 -30 min.
JFK_E

Yes, you'll just pay $5 when you exit the AirTrain at Jamaica. Where you'll also have to buy a MetroCard if you wanna continue your journey via subway.

First of all thank you for repliyng on my first question. I have another question, in fact im going to Montreal, and passing in JFK, in transit, and i've been reading in the forum that people have to check out the luggage, go through immigration, and then check in again, pass trough custums... Do i have to that to? Because i don't want to go out of the airport, i'm just changing figth, from klm to delta... Thank you.

Even though you are "just passing through" you will be technically entering the US, will have to clear US customs and immigration and clear security in another terminal in order to get to your connecting flight. You will probably arrive at terminal 4 on KLM, when you arrive claim your bags and proceed to customs/immigration. When you exit take your bags to the KLM connecting flights counter for the connecting Delta flight. You will proceed on the Airtrain (track 2) to terminal 2/3 for Delta, check-in if you don't have a boarding pass for the Montreal flight, clear security and proceed to your departure gate. You will clear Canadian customs/immigration upon your arrival in Montreal.
