I want to bring to your notice a case of harassment against me during my travel on Etihad airways. I was supposed to fly on Etihad aiways flight EY 218 from JFK, New York to Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi on 11th Feb 2010. My booking reference number was 3ZQJLR. When I presented my passport and e-ticket to the personnel at the desk for issuing boarding passes, the lady asked me to put my bags on the conveyer belt for weighing them. She then printed out baggage stickers. Then she suddenly asked me to present the credit card with which I had booked my tickets. I told her that it was my Indian credit card and I did not have it with me at that time. She said I could not board the flight unless I showed that to them. I told them that neither anyone had asked me to carry it with me in the first place, nor did my ticket say that. I had been talking with the airlines customer care daily for the past days (regarding rescheduling) and even they had not mentioned it. I had already traveled one segment of this journey on 23rd October 2009 from New Delhi- New York. Even then, I wasn’t asked to show that card.

This lady asked me to talk to the ticketing officer who thought it shouldn’t be a problem and asked me to speak with the supervisor. The supervisor initially said that I just needed to tell them the credit card number which I did. But another supervisor interfered saying that I “must” present the card or a get a copy of it faxed over to their office. With great difficulty (6:30am in India), my father in New Delhi managed to fax over a copy of my credit card to their office at about 9 pm EST. (flight was at 10 pm EST). The supervisor then refused saying that I was late. I spoke with the deputy manager too but of no avail. I told him that the fax was right there in their office but they did not even have the courtesy to go and check. They acted very rudely and unprofessionally and flatly refused to accommodate me. In the mean time, they continued to put “stand by” passengers on the plane while I wasn’t allowed.
I did not have a place to stay the night in New York city ( I had come from Philadelphia). They refused to provide me accommodation/assistance whatsoever). After a lot of pleading all they could do was to give me a ticket to travel on 13th Feb 2010.

On my flight back to Delhi on 12th Feb, I met another passenger who had faced a similar problem on 11th Feb. He told me that he was given a compensation of $800 by the deputy supervisor.

It is rather unfortunate that an airline ranked the world’s leading airline in 2009 treats its guests so unprofessionally. Nobody knew what to do that night, it was a total chaos. Only I was at the receiving end of their negligent and callous attitude. On top of that, they compensate some passengers and brush away others. I am a doctor by profession and understand how public dealing is done. This episode was really infuriating for me. I am writing this email in the hope that serious action will be taken against the officers of Etihad aiways at JFK airport, New York City. I shall make sure that this is brought to the notice of every possible higher authority in your administration.

Kindly do the needful.
Sincerely,
Dr.Aaditya Singhal

I'm a victim too. Sure, it's a high-falutin airline, from the sound of all their PR, but their administration is low-brow at best. (Lately, the cabin attendants' attitudes have gone to hell as well.) All that money can buy nice new airplanes, but apparently not attitude, nor common sense.

I had my wife's credit card to show (if needed) at boarding time in India, but they never even asked for it, so, since she was staying on in India, she kept it. Then in Abu Dhabi, they asked for it again even though they booked me and my luggage all the way through to Chicago! (They were to give us boarding passes at the transfer desk for the remaining leg to Chicago.) Obviously I did not have the card with me at AbuDhabi. So they wouldn't allow me onto the plane! I had to buy another ticket for nearly US$900! So basically, I paid for the same seat twice!

Insult to injury, I bought this ticket months in advance on this credit card THEREFORE they already had my money!

Reasoning with these people, gate agents, and supervisors is useless. They are robots. I have sent in email requests and voicemails. No response yet (two weeks.)

People, be very wary of this airline. Especially Indians! I saw some really rude behavior by cabin crew especially towards Indians.

DR. WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF FLYING CAUSED BY MUSLIM IDIOTS THAT THINK MURDER IS A WAY TO GET INTO HEAVEN. IM SURE ALLAH MEANT FOR MUSLIMS TO KILL INNOCENT MEN WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN HIS NAME. SO WE ALL HAVE TO SUFFER AT THE HANDS OF PEOPLE THAT COULDN'T GET A REAL JOB, AND WORK FOR THE AIRLINES. NOTHING BETTER THAN A G.E.D. FAILURE MAKING COMMAND DECISIONS ABOUT OUR LIVES.
AIN'T LIFE GREAT?

Dr. Singhal,

I feel sorry that you went through this ordeal. I have flown Etihad before and it specifically says in their email confirmation that a copy of the credit card used to purchase the ticket must be shown before boarding. In my case, my ticket was purchased by my boyfriend who lives abroad and I had to bring a faxed copy of it with me to the airport, since I did not have the card with me whilst traveling. As an added precaution, my boyfriend also took his credit card and identification to a local Etihad service counter ahead of time to ensure that there wouldn't be any issues. I just wanted to offer that suggestion for you in the event you decide to fly with them again.

Best wishes

you might wanna sent that directly to Etihad. dont think posting it here would help

Whaaaaaaaa!!!!!

Hello,

Can anyone tell me how to reach Hempstead from the airport ? Is it easy ?

Thanks a lot.

can anybody tell me how a non-english speaking person can get from terminal 1 to terminal 7 at JFK ? Thank you

The easiest way to travel between terminals is by the Air Tram. There are signs in every terminal directing you to the tram and it will bring you to all other terminals. It's quite easy.

What bus do I need to get to Woodstock (11 June 2010), and to get from Woodstock (17 June 2010)? Are the connections regular, and are they cheap/expensive?
Do trains run there, and if so, does anyone think a train might be better than a bus?
Thanks!

Is there a common rule about how much time should the passengers have at the airport before the flight departs?
If my first flight brings me to JFK at 6 pm, would I have enough time to catch my next flight at 8:50 pm? Is 2 hours 50 minutes enough, to get my bad, then go to the check-in again, perhaps have to wait at the checkpoints for some time. Rgs, Ms Marja.

I just went through through this at JFK. You might be ok. I had less than two hours to arrive in Terminal 1, retrieve my bag from baggage claim, get the train to terminal 5, check in for an international flight and then get through security to my gate. It worked fine and I arrived with 10 minutes to spare before boarding - BUT - I had no wait for my bag, no line at check in and no line at security. I do not think I would have made it if I had to wait at any of those places. You will probably be ok with 3 hours, but don't stop anywhere - keep moving until you get to your gate!
