John F. Kennedy International Airport is an international airport located in Jamaica, Queens, southeast of New York City.

IATA code - JFK

ICAO code - KJFK

Operated by - The airport has been operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey under a lease with New York City since 1947.

Time Zone - EST (GMT -5)

History - Construction of the airport began in 1942 with modest ambitions. Only 1,000 acres (4 km²) of land on the site of Idlewild golf course were earmarked for use. The golf course provided the airport's original namesake, Idlewild Airport. First commercial flights began on July 1, 1948. The airport was formally dedicated as New York International Airport on July 31, 1948. It was re-dedicated on December 24, 1963 as John F. Kennedy International Airport, following action of the Mayor and Council of the City of New York, and a resolution of the Commissioners of the Port Authority. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, JFK was one of the first airports in the United States to be temporarily closed.

Did firemansflame receive a response? I (with my FDNY partner) would also like to help. Any suggestions?

It is very hard to find a way to implement individual help (despite of the many inquiries, and many good intentions) in this case. So far , to my knowledge, Red Cross , the individual airlines, Terminal managements and Port Authority of NY and NJ are heavy involved in the process of helping those people.

SIM cards may be sold at Hotel Reservation desk. You need no specific papers to by it.
You can find a porter(skycap)by the baggage belts - the charge is $1/bag. There are also baggage carts - you obtain them from venting machines by each baggage belt - the charge is $5(nonrefundable) either by cash or credit card.

Offering a place to stay for a couple that is stuck at JFK airport. Can offer a bedroom and shower at our apartment.

Hi,

Yesterday Delta online emailed me that my flight #6733 to D.C. was terminal 3, Gate 19B. I thought that was strange since when I called they had told me terminal 2. Today when I am flying, I called to check and they told me it is terminal 2, gate 25. What's going on? Can't Delta tell me correctly the first time????

The airlines(especially the big ones) are changing the gates for their flight very often due to operation needs.
Usually the gate is finalized at the date of departure. Terminal 2 and 3 are connected so it will not take you so much time to go from one to the other.

I notice you have not listed any up to date information regarding the delays to flights to and from the UK/ Scandinavia due to the recent Iceland volcano.

We have a large group flying out to the UK tomorrow and are unsure as to their flight status. According to the Heathrow Airport website all flights are cancelled until 7am on Firday 16th at the earliest. Please advise.

Again, this is NOT the official website for JFK International Airport!!!

Hi, we have a break in our journey to South America at JFK, about 8 hours. Is this enough time to get into the city and how can we practically do this. Any ideas are welcome.

Eight hours is not that much given the facts that :
- you have to be back at least 2.5-3 hours prior to departure;
- you have roughly 1 hour ride to the city and 1 hour back;
But it's enough to get the taste of New York City.
Take yellow cab from JFK to any point to Manhattan and it will charge you flat $50.50 for the whole taxi. It is the fastest meaning of transportation.
There are shuttles going to the city ($15-$25/person) - see Ground Transportation(Welcome Center) agents for more info and booking.
Public Transportation is also available from JFK to the city - take Airtrain to one of the subway stations(or LIRR train station) and then take subway/LIRR train into the city. The cost is from $7.25-$13/passenger. Time wise will take you between 1hr to 1:30hrs to get to the city.
