JFK AirTrain is the automated, elevated people mover system that operates between JFK International Airport, Long Island Rail Road trains and New York City Subway.
It also serves as an on-airport service connecting the airline terminals, rental car facilities, hotel shuttles, and airport parking lots.
AirTrain Routes
- Howard Beach route
The Howard Beach route ends at the Howard Beach-JFK subway station. It stops at Lefferts Boulevard (connecting transit services - B15 bus) for shuttle buses to long term parking lots A and B and to airport employee parking.

Q11 bus Runs along Cross Bay Blvd, Q21, Q53 SBS, Q52 SBS – Serve the Cross Bay Blvd corridor
- Jamaica Station route
The Jamaica route ends at Jamaica Station on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) next to the Sutphin Boulevard/Archer Avenue-JFK subway station (to Brooklyn and Manhattan or Queens).
Connecting transit services:
E, J and Z subway trains
Q6, Q8, Q9, Q20A, Q20B, Q25/Q34, Q30, Q31, Q40, Q43, Q44, Q60 and Q65 buses.
- Airline Terminal route (free)
The Airline Terminal route connects JFK terminals, hotel shuttles, parking areas and rental car facilities.
All JFK AirTrain stations are wheelchair accessible. Howard Beach subway and Jamaica Long Island Railroad stations are wheelchair accessible too.

Take Airtrain from your terminal to Jamaica Station, transfer to E subway. At any station between Forest Hill and Jackson Hgts. transfer to the F subway. Take the F to 42nd St./5th Ave. Walk north two blocks on either 5th or 6th Aves. to 44th St., hotel is between 5th & 6th Aves.

Metro North RR-Hudson line stops at Hastings-on-Hudson, trains depart from Grand Central Terminal. At that time of night you're only options are taxi (flat rate $45+tolls+tip) or Airtrain to Jamaica Station, E subway to 53rd St, transfer to the downtown #6 subway to Grand Central. I'd take a taxi so late at night. Metro North-Hudson has trains every hour or so late nights.

I arrive around lunchtime on 4th July 2010 at JFK airport in New York. I need to go to Port Authority Bus Terminal to catch a Bus that stops near Frenchwoods.
The route I figured out from the airport to the bus terminal is taking the AirTrain towards Howard Beach, that'll cost me $5 and then change on subway line A (end station Inwood 207 St) and leave at 42 St Port Authority Bus Terminal (I think I have to walk a bit...), that'll cost me $2.25.
Is that correct? And how long will the journey take me from the airport to the bus terminal?

My family of five will arrive on Saturday at Terminal 5 on Jet Blue at 7am and leave at 6:30 for Australia at Terminal 7. Will we have time to drop our bags off at storage, go into Manhattan by the Airtrain/Subway route, see a show at the Metropolitan Museum, return by the same means to JFK, pick up our luggage and get through security to make our flight? If all this is feasible, is there any time saving advantage in storing our luggage at Terminal 1,4 or 8?
I've read a few pages of comments and can't seem to figure out if/when one is transferring terminals whether you will also need to go through security again. I know that to get from one terminal to the other, you take the AirTrain -- but is AirTrain behind the security lines, meaning once you're on it you don't have to go through security again?
I'm flying into JFK from LAX on United (landing in Terminal 7) but will be connecting a flight to Vienna, which will depart from Terminal 1. When leaving Terminal 7 for Terminal 1 via the AirTrain, will I have to go through security again in Terminal 1?
Airtrain is outside security and when a passenger transfers via Airtrain he/she has to clear security again.

Take Airtrain on track 1 from your terminal to Jamaica Station. Transfer to either the E subway ($7.25) or LIRR ($13-faster than subway and trains have overhead luggage racks) to Penn Station.
