My buddie and I have a 12hr layover at jfk(sfo to uk with delta) in Oct, can we leave the airport to visit the city and do we have to worry about our luggage or will that be handled by delta.

Most likely Delta will handle your bags , but double check again with them in SFO.

short stay in NY
I will arrive on June 21 from Montreal, terminal 8, at 11:30am. My flight to Sydney leaves the same day at 7.10pm from terminal 7. will I have enough time to travel into NY to visit the Museum of Modern Art? I presume that I will not need to clear my luggage as it will be transferred directly onto the Qantas flight, but will need to go through immigration and customs. When will I need to be back at the airport? What are the best transport options to the museum and back. Thanks
You will clear US customs in
You will clear US customs in Montreal before departure to JFK so no need to deal with customs on arrival or departure to Australia. Check with your airline in Montreal to see if they will check your bag all the way to Sydney. If not you will have to claim your bags at T8 and proceed to the Quantas counter at T7 to re-check bags. You will need to be back at JFK 2-3 hours before departure and travel time into Manhattan is at least one hour each way which doesn't leave much time for the museum, especially if you're delayed arriving from Montreal. MoMA is at 11 W. 53rd St. so from JFK take the Airtrain from your terminal to Jamaica Station and transfer to the E subway and get off at 5th Ave./53rd St., museum is right there.
