Take Airtrain to Jamaica and then LIRR train to Penn Station. For less than $15 you will get to Penn Station without worrying about the traffic. Travel time ~ 40-50 min.

I at JFK at 8 a.m. on a red-eye from California, my first time in NYC, and will need to navigate my way to an apartment in the LES. What would you suggest? On my return, I will be coming back to JFK from Mamaroneck for a Sunday evening flight. How do I do this? Thank you!

JFK to my hotel
Hi. I am flying to JFK this week and need to get to a hotel on 7th Avenue (Affinia Manhattan). I am exploring possibility of an alternative to getting a cab. Can someone please tell me the route as I am struggling with the maps. Is it AirTrain and then subway? If so, can you tell me stations and changes?
re:Request for Information
It takes somewhere between 30-50 min to clear immigration/customs.
The fastest and easiest way from JFK to Penn Station is by yellow cab - costs flat rate of $45 + bridge toll($5.50). The price is for the whole taxi, not per passenger.

Thank you...
What a wonderful service. Your good advice may mean the difference between making my connection and missing it. Thanks!!
Getting from JFK to Penn Station
I'm going from JFK to Penn Station and from what I understand, the easiest way is to take the AirTrain to Jamaica and the tranfer to the subway (or LIRR). I assume that I need a MetroCard to pay for these trips. Since I don't have a MetroCard, can I purchase one at Jamaica? At an earlier trip, at an other airport, I had to wander around the terminals inside the airport looking for some place to buy a MetroCard, which took forever...
Thanks
re:Getting from JFK to Penn Station
Yes, you can buy Metrocards at Jamaica Station .
