Take AirTrain on track 1 from terminal to Jamaica Station, transfer to either LIRR or E subway to Penn Station, transfer to NJTransit-NE Corridor train to Metropark. You can also take Amtrak to Metropark which is faster but much more expensive than NJTransit.

My son is arriving in JFK at 4.45 pm on 9th July and needs to take a train, bus to Boston. How long does it take to make the transfer to Penn station or Port Authority Bus Terminal?
The last train leaves at 7 PM from Penn station. Will he be able to make the connection in time to catch the train?
What are the options if his flight is delayed?

It will be close if he is arriving via international and has to clear customs which can take up to one hour. He can take the NYAirports bus to Penn Station or LIRR from Jamaica Station (via AirTrain from terminal) to Penn Station. I've made it from terminal to Penn Station via LIRR in 40 minutes if you time the trains right. Megabus departs from 9th Ave/31st St one block from Penn Station and goes to South Station-Boston, leaving at 7:10pm and 8:10pm for just $13 one way compared to $68 on Amtrak. See us.megabus.com.

Public transportation will get you there cheaply but allow about two hours to travel, this route is: AirTrain on track 1 from terminal to Jamaica Station, LIRR or E subway to Penn Station, NJ Transit train to Newark Airport station, Newark Airport AirTrain to terminals and approximate cost is $25.
Air train/llr to brooklyn
Hi...looking for some advice! We arrive from London on 14th July at 9.30pm. We are a party of 2 adults and 2 kids trying to keep transportation costs low. Is the air train then llr to Atlantic terminal a realistic option? Our apt is in Carroll st in Brooklyn and I am wondering if this would be too late with immigration etc?

What is the address on Carroll St? LIRR is a good option especially in the evening, however you'll have a long walk (13 blocks!!) from Atlantic Terminal to Carroll St. depending on the address. From Atlantic Terminal walk down 4th Ave. to Carroll St. Addresses 500 and below are to the right and above 500 to the left. You can also take the A subway from Howard Beach Station (via AirTrain) to Hoyt-Schermerhorn and transfer to the Church Ave-bound G subway to Carroll St (at Smith St). AirTrain is $5, subway is $2.25 including transfers and LIRR is $6.75 off-peak fare.
