Hi, we travel tomorrow morning friday from San Jose (Costa Rica) to NY JFK and have our next flight to London at 9pm with American Airlines AA132 (our final destination is Brussels). As it seems this flight to London will be cancelled following many forecasts, are we going to stay at a hotel in NY to get the next plane to London on saturday ? I'm travelling with my husband and 2 little kids, so i'm worried about what will happen. Thanks !

Dear Anna,

Indeed the airspace above northern and western Europe and the UK has been closed untill further notice, regarding the vulcanic eruptions in Iceland.

Do not worry too much. The airspace officials are concerned of the safety of the airspace and it will not open before it is completely safe to fly again.

With kind regards,

AMS int.

Brussels airport will remain closed untill 6 pm, friday 16; update after 6 pm

You may get lucky. It is possible that UK will open the airspace as Thu and Fri was completly cosed. Check www.heathrowairport.com Fingers crossed.

The UK airspace remain closed due to volcanic ash spreaded from Iceland. Belgium airspace also. So at the moment both Heathrow and Brussel airports are no operating any flights. Maybe Saturday will get better.
Good luck.

I need Help.. My ride just feel thru.
I am arriving To JFK April 17 2010 .. and i need transportation to Penn station or to Fox News .. What r my options....

By Public transport:
Take Airtrain from any terminal on track 1 to Jamaica Station( be careful - on that track there are two alternating trains going to different routes; check the sign above the doors as the train arrives; the red colored sign is Jamaica one). Then either:
-take subway line E to Penn Station(total fare - $7.25) or
-take LIRR to Penn Station(faster;total fare - $13; less on weekends)
You can also take a taxi(yellow cab) which will charge you flat $50.50 for the whole cab.
Shared van services are available at Ground Transportation (Welcome Center) counter for $18-$25/person.

My husband is stuck at JFK due to the Island Vulcano!! His flight was at 6:30 your time to Amsterdam (and then further to Munich). It seems everything has been cancelled so far. Any news on how he will make it home???

Many thanks!!!

Dear Nancy,

As you may know, there's been a vulcano eruption in Iceland. The winds are blowing the vulcanic ash over western and northern Europe (including the UK). Therefor the airspace above the UK and the Netherlands in your husbands case, are closed untill further notice. Flights heading south from Amsterdam are delayed heavily. London Heathrow cancelled all flights.

The vulcanic ash can jam the jet engines, causing them to fail. This risk is obviously too big to keep flying.

But, some flights are being rerouted as we speak, since it is possible to fly south and cross the atlantic ocean near Portugal and Spain.

It is unclear at this point when the eruptions will end, and when the airspace is save again.

With kind regards,

AMS int.

Hello,

Actually all the flights in Europa are cancelled due to the Island Vulcano.

Normally, airports will lift a ban today (2010-04-16) at 6:00 pm. (but it is not sure!)

good luck

As you may know, there is a vulcano bursting in Iceland right at the moment. I am heading home to Finland from JFK on monday. I would like to know if there has been cancelled flights to Europe, especially to Iceland? I would definitely want to know if I should stay in NY or head to JFK on monday? Do you have any info here in JFK:s page about possible delays? I would appreciate your help concerning my problem...

Yours, Heidi

Dear Heidie.

Your chance of heading home to Finland are rather low this week. You should check on the website of the airport you're heading, to see if there are any cancelled flights there. I assume your flight will or has been cancelled.

The airspace above northern and western Europe (including Iceland)is closed untill further notice.

It is simply to dangerous to fly in vulcanic dust and ashes. It can make the engines of the airplane fail.

With kind regards,

AMS int.
