Latest TSA Security Directives

3-1–1 for Carry-ons

Air travelers may now carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints.

With certain exceptions for prescription and over-the-counter medicines, baby formula and breast milk, and other essential liquids, gels, and aerosols, the following rules apply to all liquids, gels, and aerosols you want to carry through a security checkpoint.

3–1–1 for carry-ons

  • 3 ounce bottle or less
  • 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag
  • 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin.

One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3 oz. container size is a security measur

Come early and be patient. Heavy travel volumes and the enhanced security process may mean longer lines at security checkpoints.

Updates to the TSA Security Requirements(effective November 10, 2006):

Latest security bans according to the TSA Security Directives

Summary of Security Directive Changes for Flights departing from and within the U.S.

  • Effective November 10, 2006, the TSA has advised that travelers may now carry through security checkpoints travel-size toiletries (3.4 ounces/100 ml or less) that fit comfortably in ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic re-sealable bag. At the security checkpoint passengers will be asked to remove the clear plastic re-sealable bag from their accessible baggage and place it in a separate bin or on the conveyor belt for screening. X-raying these items separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items. In addition, prescription liquid, gel and aerosol medications, baby formula/milk/food, and diabetic glucose treatments must be declared at the checkpoint for additional screening if they are not included in the ONE QUART clear plastic re-sealable bag.

  • Passengers who attempt to bring undeclared liquids, gels, or aerosols into the sterile area without providing to the TSA for separate screening may be subjected to secondary screening.

  • Passengers who purchase liquids, gels, and/or aerosols in the sterile area are now allowed to take them onboard the aircraft.

  • Duty Free liquids, gels, and/or aerosols purchased inside the sterile area may be brought onboard the aircraft by passengers, and no longer must be delivered to the aircraft.

Summary of Security Directive Changes for Flights departing from non-U.S. (except the UK)

    • Liquids, gels, and/or aerosols are not carried into the sterile area through the screening checkpoint AND
    • Passengers do not mingle with other passengers who have not been screened to enter the sterile area.
    • If both of the aforementioned points cannot be ensured, liquid, gel or aerosol Duty Free items must be delivered to the passenger onboard the aircraft or as he/she boards the aircraft.

The airline is suggesting that all customers consider checking all of their luggage, in an effort to minimize delays at airport security checkpoints.

Hi,

I have a similar situation except that I am sending my wife, a 1 yr old and a 4 yr old to Europe two weeks before I go myself. I would really like to be able to go to the gate to help them board, but obviously my ticket is for two weeks later and I wouldn't have a valid boarding pass for that day...

One other extenuating circumstance might be: I am a US Private Pilot and hold a valid Private Pilot Certificate. Would that make it at all possible for me get through security to help my family to the gate?

(Traveling with little kids can be tough - on the return I'm with them...)

Thanks.

-al

Just call the airline and they will give you a pass to go to the gate. I did that for my 15 year old traveling for the first time by herself and arranged for the family she was staying with to go to the gate when she was coming home

Having such a Certificate won't help you get behind security. Your only chance is to speak to airline reps and get a gate pass from them.

Last wednesday I flew from YFK to Caracas through San Juan, American Airlines flights 419 y 1375. When I arrieved home I notice that TSA opened one of my bags (ticket # 3001596662)and tooked out two motorcycle shocks I was bringing. TSA left me a note informing the searching but no information about how to proceed to request the restitution of my goods. Please give me information how should I do.

I wonder if I put in my luggage with the box, can I bring it back to China?

I am helping a client traveling to England in July. She must take insulin, needles and an epipen onboard with her. What procedures will she need to follow to go through TSA security? Also, she has dietary restrictions and may not be able to find appropriate foods inside the terminal. Can she bring dry food in her carry on bag?

Dry food is allowed in carry-on, no liquids. Make sure she takes all medication; insulin, needles, epipen, etc. out of her carry-on and place these items in the gray bin separately from all other item. She should advise the TSA personnel that she has these items before placing the bin through the x-ray machine so they know what to look for on the x-ray image. They may need to do additional screening so be sure she has any medical documentation just in case.

I rencentlt travelled in and out of JFK airport while on vacation (I'm an Australian citizen) and was upset that 3 of my locks were taken even though they are the TSA, approved locks. Not only was my luggage left vulnerable for my trip but each lick cost ne $18. I have contacted my travel insurance company which will reimburse the locks as long as I can give them a report-letter from JFK airport to prove I have reported this incident. Can you please advise on this matter to my email as well?

Thank you

Hello, I am in the early stages of booking my 4th annual holiday from near Manchester UK to Las Vegas for next year, and the flight i'm looking at booking is through Delta- flight numbers 155 & 1629 with a connection in JFK.
I've only ever flown with US Airways with a connection in Philidelphia, where we've cleared customs & immigration prior to boarding the connecting flight.
I was wondering if this is the same case in JFK, and also how long is there between disembarking flight 155 and boarding flight 1629?
Many thanks,
C S UK

It is the same - you will clear the customs and immigration at JFK. Give yourself 1 hour to 1.5 hours for that.

I am a US permanent resident traveling to Puerto Rico from JFK on Wednesday and I recently lost my permanent reidence card. I have sent the application but because of the short time that has passed I have yet to recieve the confirmation letter in order to get my passport stamped. Will i have a problem traveling to and from Puerto Rico with my mexican passport? I have copies of my permanent residence card, SS sec card and student ids.

You have no problem as long as will be arriving in PR from USA mainland.
Have your USA passport and the copy of the Green card , just in case.
