Duration of security checks
I am travelling to Panama-City from Germany with a 20h stop-over at JFK. I'd like to use this time to spent some hours in the city.
Am I able to leave the airport? Do I need a visitors visa?
Can you estime how long security checks last at JFK for German nationals?
How many hours before take-off would you recommend to be at JFK?

If you are traveling transit( and have all proper documentation) then you will be able to leave airport and visit the city. Security check can take up to 1 hr. Be at JFK at least 3 hours before the take-off time.

1st vacation to the usa
next week thursday, 07/01/10 we will be arriving at jfk airport around 9 pm. How long does it take to abort the plane and get through customs and immigratonservices ?? We have to get to new ark, frontage road and want to use the public transport. How do we get there and can you give us time-schedules + how long does it take to go from jfk to new ark airport ??? please be so kind to send me an answer before we leave. It will take you about 30-45
It will take you about 30-45 minutes to clear customs/immigration. At that time of evening it would be best to take a taxi from JFK to your Newark destination, travel time about one hour and cost is about $75. You may arrive too late in the evening for a shuttle but check at the Ground Transportation Desk when you clear customs.

There two trains that stop
There two trains that stop at Poughkeepsie: Amtrak's Empire Service from Penn Station ($44 one-way peak, $23 evenings after 8pm) or MTA Metro North-Hudson Line from Grand Central Station ($20 one-way peak time, $15 off-peak). Reservations are generally required on Amtrak and can be booked online (www.amtrak.com), not necessary on MTA (www.mta.info.mnr). You can take the NYAS bus from your terminal to either Penn Station or Grand Central for $15, easier than subway.
Time to clear customs and bus to Penn?
Thanks BG. How long should I allow to clear customs, security etc and bus to Penn Station. How frquent are the NYAS buses to Penn? We land at 1640 Friday 3 September.

It generally takes 30-45 minutes to complete the customs/immigration process however you're arriving at the start of the Labor Day holiday weekend so it could be much busier and take longer. The NYAS shuttles to Penn Station and Grand Central Station run every 20-30 minutes from each terminal, follow signs to Ground Transportation. Bus travel time is about one hour depending on traffic.
Quickest journey to Penn
May have to make a dash to Penn by taxi. How long to get the cab, how long to reach Penn..and cost?

Taxi to Penn Station is flat rate $45+tolls+tip and takes about 45 minutes or possibly more depending on traffic. Taxis are available at Ground Transportation area of every terminal.
Transportation at JFK
1. I need to change terminals at JFK from Terminal 4 to Terminal 3 with my 85 year-old mother in a wheel chair and my baggage trolley (3 suitcases + 2
carry ons).
Can a JFK employee help address my concerns:
1. Does the airtrain stop long enough for me to entrain / disembark comfortably within the time it stops at Terminals 4 & 3 ?
2. Will the disembarking airline at Terminal 4 permit me to take their wheelchair to Terminal 3 (how do I return it to them after use ?)
3. How much time should I reckon from arrival time in Terminal 4 to departure time in Terminal 3 to catch my connecting flight comfortably ?
4. Can I use any sort of service available at JFK (paid or voluntary) to assist me transfer from Terminals 4 to 3 ? I am a senior citizen myself,
and am apprehensive of making the transfer in time, or losing my mother and/or my baggage en route.

1. The Airtain stops enough long at the stations so you can get in and out in a timely manner.
2. The will send a wheelchair assistant with a wheelchair(it is free) all the way to the check-in counter of the next airline.
3. At least one hour and a half.
4. Having a wheelchair assistant is enough for you to make it comfortably without any worries.

travel assistance
My wife, who will be 32 weeks pregnant at the time of flying, will be flying with my 2 children into JFK and I was hoping to find a transport of some sort to help them to their next connecting gate. What services are available for a situation like this? Layover is going to be approximately 2 hours between flights.
